New Scripts for Space

Nokia live group brief for Goldsmiths, University of London.

In generating data for their global mapping project, Nokia use a set of 406 attributes to build an image of streets and spaces. We felt this approach reduced areas of infinite beauty and complexity to narrow, dispassionate definitions. To combat this we began to develop an alternative set of 406 attributes that were derived from works of fiction to be used as a means of extending literary metaphors over space.

Extracting Borge’s ‘The Dead Man’ story into these attributes acted as a starting point to transcribe these new meanings through this layering of fiction and apply them onto Canary Wharf, London. By viewing a space through this lens of fiction, it became possible to understand it in a more nuanced and poetic way.
